Malta is beautiful all year round, but when it comes to photography - light, weather, and atmosphere make all the difference.

One of the most common questions I get is: “What’s the best time of year for a couple photoshoot in Malta?”
The answer? It depends on the kind of vibe you’re after. Let’s walk through the seasons together so you can get a feel for what each one offers.

Spring is one of my personal favourites for photography. The countryside is still lush from winter, wildflowers are blooming, and temperatures are just right. The air feels fresh, and the light is soft. It’s the perfect recipe for candid, relaxed moments.
Ideal for: those who love natural colours, greenery, and quiet scenic spots.
Sunset time: Between 6:00 pm in March and 8:00 pm by late May.
Bonus: Tourist crowds are still low, which means more peaceful locations for your Malta photoshoot.
Spring in Malta (March – May)

Summer brings long golden days, crystal-clear skies, and that unmistakable Mediterranean glow. It’s a popular time for vacation photoshoots and surprise proposals, especially by the sea.
Best times to shoot: early morning (6:00–8:00 am) or golden hour before sunset (7:30–8:30 pm).
Great for: beach sessions, engagement photography, and couples on holiday.
Keep in mind: midday heat can be intense, and many locations get busy — but with the right timing and a beautiful place like Fomm ir-Riħ or Għajn Tuffieħa hill, the results are worth it.
Summer in Malta (June – August)

Autumn is a little quieter and full of warmth. Not just in the colours, but in the atmosphere. September and October are especially beautiful, with golden sunsets and just the right amount of breeze in the air.
The vibe: softer light, deeper tones, and a relaxed pace.
Weather: still warm, with fewer crowds.
Sunset: shifts from 7:00 pm in September to around 5:00 pm by November (after the clock change).
Autumn is perfect for those who want natural, warm-toned portraits without the summer rush.

Winter might surprise you — it’s calm, intimate, and full of understated charm. The streets are quieter, the light is soft, and the cooler air brings a unique mood to every photo.
Perfect for: cozy sessions, winter elopements, or city walks in Mdina, Valletta, or Birgu.
Light: soft and diffused — great for capturing emotion without harsh shadows.
Sunset: around 4:45–5:15 pm, especially after the October clock change.
Some of my favourite candid moments happen during winter shoots, when the island slows down and everything feels more personal.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Each season in Malta has its own charm and light. Whether it’s wildflowers in spring, a beach proposal in summer, a golden autumn stroll, or a winter walk through the old streets of Valletta - we’ll find the moment that fits you best.
